“ As part of the official launch of the Cape Verde Chapter, a set of activities were presented as a way of highlighting our commitment to helping women find their voice in the world of technology. We then carried out the Women in Engineering Program: Intensive Masterclasses, which included the participation of experts from Women in Tech ® Portugal and national experts. Women in Engineering is an intensive training program for higher education students/girls”.

According to Mayra Silva, in the first phase, the focus is on activities aimed at training and digital education. As an example, the ambassador revealed that more than 300 children aged between 6 and 12 benefited from training in the area of robotics and basic IT, in Mindelo, and in the City of Praia.

“Cape Verde is full of incredible women, and I would like to take this opportunity to reinforce that as a representative of Women in Tech Cabo Verde, we will encourage more Cape Verdean women to venture into the world of technology. Promote female mutual help, improving the standard of living, through training using new technologies. Develop the ‘Agile Mindset’ and create more ‘role models’, so that women have greater representation in leadership in different industries, namely in technology and being at the forefront of actions, as well as open innovation and innovative entrepreneurship”.

During her mandate, Mayra Silva ensures that she will do everything to ensure that Women in Tech GLOBAL’s existing resources and tools are available to and benefit Cape Verdean women, in the country and in the diaspora.

“In Cape Verde, as in many places, challenges in promoting gender equality in the technological field include the lack of female representation, gender stereotypes and unequal access to educational opportunities. In my opinion, overcoming these challenges involves educating society about the importance of gender diversity in technology; inclusion in education: ensuring that girls have equal access to educational programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), etc.”

Mayra Silva argues that overcoming challenges also involves mentoring and networking, which works to establish programs to support women in their technological careers and create support networks; challenge and deconstruct gender stereotypes by encouraging women at all levels of the industry; create inclusive policies; promote specific events and initiatives for women in technology and give visibility and inspire future generations.

Inclusion

The Women in Tech Cabo Verde ambassador emphasizes that it is essential to create the conditions so that women and girls can enjoy their rights to reach their full potential. The organization, according to Mayra Silva, intends to hold local events and specific mentoring programs for women, girls and children in the communities. Also highlight women, to share inspiring stories, engage in community events and activities to increase visibility and promote inclusion.

“ Collective effort is necessary to promote equality. It is important to involve the whole of society, to call on men, boys and people of all genders – whether in government, academia, the private sector or communities – everyone has an important role to play here. We intend to add more value through mentoring programs, educational events, facilitating networking and strategic partners. These initiatives aim to create learning opportunities, exchange of experiences and access to resources”.

Women in Tech Cabo Verde’s long-term vision for gender equality in the technology sector is “to help create a world where women and girls thrive in STEAM, shaping the future of technology with confidence and excellence”.

“There is no doubt that the job market for those in the technology field is promising. Therefore, we need to be resilient, always open to new experiences, as sometimes unexpected opportunities can lead to incredible journeys. Each of us, individually, must be a role model , a partner who encourages girls, women to grow, to be bold, to trust in themselves, in their abilities and capabilities.”

The launching ceremony of ‘Chapter Women in Tech®’ was attended by prominent figures, including the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, and the CEO of Women in Tech Global.
