Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Cape Verdean senior men’s handball team concluded the group stage of the 2026 African Handball Championship (CAN) today with a perfect record, defeating Benin 32-24 in Kigali, Rwanda.
Following victories against the Democratic Republic of Congo (34-28) and the Kingdom of Morocco (33-28), the Cape Verdean team once again demonstrated its superiority against Benin, starting strongly and reaching halftime with a 14-11 lead.
In the second half, Cape Verde maintained control of the game, consolidated its defensive organization, and managed the pace of the match well, gradually increasing the lead until the final score was 32-24.
Captain Leandro Semedo was named MVP.
With this result, the Blue Sharks secured their third consecutive victory and finished the group stage with six points, guaranteeing the leadership of Group D and confirming a solid start in the continental competition.
Cape Verde, which had already secured qualification for the main round in the second round, awaits the outcome of the third round to find out its opponent in the round of 16.
This was the first game of the day, and the other game in this group will be between the national teams of Congo and Morocco, both defeated by Cape Verde in the first and second rounds, respectively.
