Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Cape Verde was elected, this Monday, June 2, for one of the vice-presidencies of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), in a plenary session held at the UN headquarters, in New York. The meeting was attended by the Permanent Representative of Cape Verde to the United Nations, Ambassador Tânia Romualdo.
The session, chaired by the current president of the 79th UNGA, had as its main objective the election of the new president and vice-presidents of the next session of the Assembly. The process took place in accordance with the principle of regional rotation, which aims to ensure balanced geographical representation in UN leadership structures.
Annalena Baerbock, former German Foreign Minister, was elected to preside over the 80th session, becoming the fifth woman to assume the leadership of the UNGA in the 80 years of the United Nations’ existence.
In his acceptance speech, Baerbock highlighted as priorities for his term the acceleration of climate action, the promotion of global inclusion, the equitable representation of all regions in decision-making processes and the advancement of institutional reforms within the UN.
After the election of the president, the Assembly chose the vice-presidents, also based on regional distribution criteria. Cape Verde was one of the countries selected to occupy one of the vice-presidencies, reinforcing its commitment to multilateralism and international diplomacy.
The term of office of the new UNGA leadership, including that of President Annalena Baerbock and Vice-Presidents, will begin on 9 September 2025.
