Cape Verde Faces Tropical Wave With Safety Recommendations

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INMG) is warning of a tropical wave approaching the archipelago on August 16th, 17th, and 18th. This phenomenon is expected to intensify starting at midnight on August 17th. The National Civil Protection and Fire Service (SNPCB) issued a set of guidelines for the population of the islands of Sotavento, Maio, Santiago, Fogo, and Brava, due to the forecast of heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms during the weekend of August 15th to 17th.

According to INMG, the weather in the archipelago has been affected by the arrival of a southern monsoon, abnormal ocean warming between Cape Verde and the coast of Mauritania, and the passage of easterly waves every three days.

During this period, precipitation of varying intensity is expected, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms and increased wind intensity, initially on the southern islands and gradually spreading across the entire archipelago.

“The sea will have waves from the south and southeast, 1.0 to 2.0 meters high, and from the north and northeast, 1.5 to 2.0 meters high, north of the archipelago,” it indicates.

The INMG recommends increased caution, especially on the islands that received the most recent rainfall, especially on slopes and streams.

The institute assures that it will monitor and update the weather and release all information.

Civil Protection releases safety recommendations for the Leeward Islands

To prevent accidents and minimize risks, the Civil Defense recommends avoiding driving in areas at risk of flooding, streams, and slopes; ensuring that ditches and drainage systems near homes are cleaned.

It also advises against crossing streams or flooded roads; Seek a safe place to shelter; avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain.

It is also advisable to remain attentive to local authority guidelines and take extra care when driving, reducing speed and maintaining a safe distance.

The SNPCB also urges that, in emergency situations, immediate contact with the appropriate authorities be made.
