Africa-Press – Cape verde. The national senior men’s basketball team lost today, Saturday, to the Angolan team by (67-80) in the game of the second round of the fifth and final qualification for the 2023 World Cup, held at the Pavilhão Multiuso do Kilamba, in Luanda. With this defeat, Cape Verde drops to third place in Group E, but still has chances of qualifying as the best ranked third.
The Angolan team, which was stronger throughout the game, won all four periods (20-18, 23-18, 21-16 and 16-15), reaching the end of the game with a difference of 13 points (80-67 ).
Cape Verde, after this defeat, has 14 points and drops to the third position in its group (Group E), but still has chances to qualify as the best ranked third. However, at the moment, Tunisia, third in group F, with 17 points, has an advantage over Cape Verde.
Ivory Coast leads Cape Verde group
In Group E, Côte d’Ivoire leads with 17 points followed by Angola (16 points), Cape Verde and Nigeria (14 points), Guinea-Conakry and Uganda (10 points).
The national team will be back on the pitch this Sunday, the 26th, to face the Ivory Coast team, which is already qualified for the World Cup.
It should be recalled that this match on the second day of the fifth and final African qualifying phase held at the Multiuso Pavilion in Luanda (Angola) was marked by a technical problem, a power failure, at the end of the second period.
Angola guarantees presence in the Basketball World Cup
With this Saturday’s victory over Cape Verde, the Angolan team qualified for the 2023 Basketball World Cup.
The African qualification qualifiers for the 2023 Mundial began to be played in November 2021 and ended in February of the current year, involving 16 national teams competing for the five places, in five windows of the tournament over 15 months.
The first two places and the best third place of the two groups of six teams qualify for the World Cup.
Mundial’2023 will have the participation of 32 teams instead of the usual 24 and will take place between August 25th and September 10th in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines.
