Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cape Verde will participate in the 3rd Macaronesia Summit, which will take place this Thursday, the 7th, in Lanzarote, Canary Islands.

According to a note sent by the Government, this meeting, which brings together the archipelagos of Cape Verde, Madeira, the Azores and the Canary Islands, aims to strengthen cooperation and develop a common agenda in strategic sectors of interest to the Region.

The Cape Verdean delegation will be led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration, José Filomeno Monteiro, representing the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva.

The event will be attended by the President of the Regional Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, (host); the President of the Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque; the Vice-President of the Azores, Artur Manuel Leal; as well as the Secretary General for the European Union at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain, David Navarro García, representing the Government of Spain.

The Macaronesia Summit is an essential platform for inter-regional cooperation, enabling the sharing of strategies that promote sustainable development and economic resilience in the four archipelagos.

According to the same source, priority areas for collaboration include sustainable tourism, technological innovation, energy transition, transport and the promotion of a circular economy. A final declaration by the governments of Macaronesia will be adopted at the end of the Summit.

It is worth noting that, within the scope of this summit, the Head of Cape Verdean Diplomacy will also hold several bilateral meetings with the leaders of the Macaronesian archipelagos to discuss closer relations.

The last summit was held in the Azores in 2018, with the first having been held in 2010 on the island of São Vicente. This week’s event thus marks another important step in the realization of the common vision of progress and sustainability for the Macaronesia region, on the one hand, and the deepening of Cape Verde’s inter-regional integration, on the other hand.
