Cape Verde wants “sustainable development with greater contribution from marine resources” – PM

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cape Verde wants to achieve sustainable development with a greater contribution from marine resources. This position was defended this Monday by Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva, when presiding over the official opening of the 2024 edition of Cape Verde Ocean Week (CVOW).

The head of the executive highlights the potential to be developed, particularly in Cape Verde, but in general in all island countries.

“Global challenges, national commitments and the potential of the ocean are more than enough reasons to hold Ocean Week every year and to be gathered here in this small developing island country, small in territory but large in its exclusive economic zone. In Cape Verde, we have set strategic objectives to achieve sustainable development with a greater contribution from ocean and coastal resources, but managed in a sustainable manner. The Blue Economy Policy Charter, the National Investment Plan for the Blue Economy and the Regime for the Management of Fishing Activities in Maritime Waters and on the High Seas are important instruments that Cape Verde has at its disposal, approved and are being implemented”, he assures.

The Prime Minister reaffirms the objectives of sustainable management of ocean and coastal resources, and of positioning Cape Verde as a centre for the development of skills in the field of the blue economy.

“Knowledge and protection of marine biodiversity and coastal areas, ocean literacy and integration into a very interesting initiative called the Atlantic Blue Schools Network are important for supporting the sustainable exploitation of marine resources and for the education and training of young people from an early age. It is also a strategic objective to position Cape Verde as a centre for the development of skills in the field of the blue economy”, he stresses.

Ulisses Correia e Silva points to the strengthening of climate governance, the energy transition, the reduction of dependence on fossil fuels, the implementation and creation of the National Climate Transparency System and the Climate Law as initiatives that “distinguish Cape Verde” in the concert of nations.

Cabo Verde Ocean Week 2024 is expected to include a series of conferences with the participation of experts and decision-makers from Cape Verde, Portugal, Morocco, the United States, Germany, Senegal, among other countries.

In addition to incorporating Expomar, which marks its 11th edition this year, the programme for the 7th edition of CVOW included Blue Talks, Podcasts and other activities.
