Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cape Verde’s exports increased by 36.4% in the third quarter of 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year, while imports grew by 14.7%, according to provisional data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

According to the report on Foreign Trade, national exports rose from 1,724 million escudos in the third quarter of 2024 to 2,352 million escudos in the same period of 2025, representing an increase of 628 million escudos.

Imports increased from 45,002 million escudos to 51,615 million escudos, an increase of 6,613 million escudos compared to the same period of the previous year.

Re-exports registered a slight decrease of 0.4%, while the trade deficit increased by 13.8%. Despite this, the import coverage ratio by exports improved, rising from 3.8% to 4.6%, according to the document sent to Inforpress.

Europe remained the main destination for Cape Verdean exports, absorbing 90.7% of the total.

Spain continues to lead, with 65.6% of exports, although it registered a decrease of 8.7 percentage points compared to the third quarter of 2024. Italy (14.6%) and Portugal (10.1%) follow, while Gambia appears in fourth position, with an increase of 1.4 percentage points.

Prepared and preserved fish products remained the main export product, representing 84.9% of the total, followed by clothing (5.1%) and footwear (3.6%).

Regarding imports, the European continent continues to be Cape Verde’s main supplier, accounting for 57.4% of the total, although this is down compared to the 62.8% recorded in the same period of 2024. Asia/Oceania occupies second place (23.3%), followed by Africa (11.9%) and America (5.4%).

Portugal remained the main trading partner, with 14,900 thousand contos (28.9% of total imports), despite a reduction of 7.8 percentage points compared to the previous year. Spain occupies second place (11.9%) and Nigeria third (9.7%), registering a strong increase associated with the rise in fuel imports.

Fuels continue to be the main imported product, representing 33.2% of total imports, followed by aircraft and aircraft (6.7%), motor vehicles (6.1%), reactors and boilers (5.5%) and machinery and engines (5.4%).

By major categories of goods, imports of consumer goods (14.3%), intermediate goods (18.1%) and capital goods (150.2%) registered increases, while fuel imports decreased by 13.3%.
