History of the CNE

It should be recalled that the National Elections Commission was institutionalized in 1994, by Law 112/IV/94, putting an end to the system of composition of ad hoc commissions, created for each election and extinguished after the promulgation of the definitive electoral results.

In 1999, its operation was regulated by the Electoral Code, which came to define it as the highest body of electoral administration, operating alongside the National Assembly, with its own competences, and endowed with administrative, financial and patrimonial autonomy.
