Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Regional Commander of the National Police (PN), in Santiago Sul and Maio, Roberto Fernandes, adds that the city of Praia is at the top of the crime rate in the country. However, he assures that the Police are carrying out emergency actions on the ground. On average, they have seized three weapons every two days.
In an interview with RCV, Roberto Fernandes said that given the latest occurrences, the Police have been doing their job to reduce cases of violence in the city of Praia. But he said, however, that they do not always report their actions. As he explained, field operations have resulted in the seizure, on average, of three weapons every two days.
“Most of these weapons that I have already mentioned were seized by crime prevention and operation groups, which are working in the places, at times when we have the highest crime records. We analyze the situation, the recorded occurrences, and the complaints, and we engage these groups in the places and times according to the occurrences, which allowed us to make, on average, the seizure of three weapons, every two days”, he said.
More weapons than ammunition circulating
The Regional Commander of the PN, in Santiago Sul and Maio, also stated that the number of weapons captured is by far greater than the number of ammunition seized during operations, which means, according to him, that there are more weapons than ammunition circulate in the capital.
“In 2021 we seized 401 weapons and seized 534 ammunition only. It is a higher number, but according to the weapons capacity, especially conventional weapons, it is relatively few. This year, we have already seized 178 firearms but only 125 ammunition. That is, most of the time we learn weapons we are not framing the ammunition,” he explained.
