Africa-Press – Cape verde. Hipólito Barreto, the PAICV representative for the São Nicolau constituency, today denounced what he considers to be a “generalized disinvestment” by the government in educational infrastructure, agriculture, and fishing.

In a statement to Inforpress to review his ten-day visit to the constituency, the parliamentarian harshly criticized the current administration, calling the state of neglect of several schools on the island “shameful.”

According to the representative, he considers it “a disgrace” to see that many schools are being “abandoned,” referring, among other cases, to the Lucília Freitas school, where, according to reports, “when it rains outside, it rains more inside the classrooms than outside.”

The representative also cited the Narciso Ramalho school in Vale da Fajã, which suffers from a lack of adequate space, denouncing that the teachers’ lounge is located in a “makeshift kiosk.”

The parliamentarian also denounced the current situation at the Baltasar Lopes da Silva school, stating that the construction of only two classrooms has not yet been completed after two terms of the current administration.

Hipólito Barreto also denounced what he considers to be a “process of liquidation of the local delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture,” emphasizing the lack of investment in various sectors, both in terms of materials and human and financial resources.

He emphasized that this has had “direct consequences for livestock farming,” with livestock being decimated due to a lack of technical support for farmers.

The fishing sector, another vital activity in the island’s economy, has also been criticized because, according to the parliamentarian, fishermen lack adequate infrastructure for maintaining their equipment and face difficulties accessing the fishing complex.

Hipólito Barreto also considered it unacceptable that fishermen continue to pay the road maintenance fee, which is tied to fuel.

The PAICV national deputy concluded his speech by warning of the urgent need for a change in political direction that would allow for a true investment in the well-being of the population of São Nicolau, with special attention to education, agriculture, fishing, and health.
