Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Movement for Democracy (MpD) MP for the European constituency Emanuel Barbosa is the only candidate for the leadership of this party in Portugal, a position he has held since 2010, he confirmed to Inforpress today.
According to the current coordinator of MpD-Portugal, his candidacy under the slogan “New strength, new victories. With the Diaspora, for Cape Verde. Always!” was the only one formalized with the Electoral Process Support Office (GAPE).
Emanuel Barbosa justified his candidacy for a third term with the ambition of transforming Portugal into an “inducing country” for other countries in the European circle, aiming for the party’s victory in the 2026 legislative elections.
“We understand that this victory [in 2026] is important for the party, but above all for the country. Therefore, we want to make our contribution from Portugal to spread the word to other European countries and, in doing so, also contribute to victory on a general level,” he stressed.
The modernization of the party, the opening up to the Cape Verdean community in Portugal, the guarantee of a greater territorial reach of the MpD in the country and a “strong commitment” to communication, particularly on social media, are among several “lines of force” of the motion of strategies of the candidacy centered on the victory of the MpD in the 2026 legislative elections.
Emanuel Barbosa also committed to working so that, after the internal elections, which will take place on July 20, the MpD will establish itself as the “largest Cape Verdean party” in Portugal.
Regarding Tuesday’s meeting between the president of the MpD, Ulisses Correia e Silva, and the party’s members, supporters and friends in Portugal, he said that it was important, taking into account that proximity is a “sacrosanct” issue for the party in power in Cape Verde.
This meeting, according to the deputy, showed that the proximity has not only been at a national level, but also in the diaspora.
