Africa-Press – Cape verde. COSPE, on the island of Fogo, Amigos da Natureza, in Santo Antão, and the Mértola de São Nicolau Heritage Development Association are the three associations that will benefit from funding from the European Union to develop projects aimed at promoting and offering sustainable tourism in protected areas.
The ambassador of the European Union, Carla Grijó, says that the total sum of these projects, whose objective is to “promote sustainable tourism in protected areas”, totals approximately three million euros.
Grijó considers it pertinent to diversify the tourist offer in the country and thus generate income for the other islands.
“There is a lot of discussion in Cape Verde about the importance of diversifying the tourist offer, this was in fact the subject of an international conference in Santo Antão in September, in which there was a lot of talk about this, let’s say that this is also a contribution from the European Union towards the diversification of the tourist offer in Cape Verde as a way of also generating income on other islands that until now have been far from this dynamic of the development of the tourism sector”.
Despite there being only three Associations covered and who will sign the contract, the ambassador makes it clear that they have a “contractual obligation” to include other associations and Organizations in their projects.
The Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Gilberto Silva, considers that the signing and implementation of these contracts will bring many gains to the country, since the three winning NGOs will develop projects “for greater integration of local tourism activities, nature-oriented tourism , rural tourism combined with good management of protected areas”, which according to will contribute to having “better preserved and protected protected areas and, on the other hand, income-generating activities that allow families to increase their income”.
The three projects were selected under the call for proposals launched in November 2022, entitled “supporting and strengthening civil society as a promoter of sustainable tourism in protected areas as a factor in generating income for local communities, contributing in the long term for environmental sustainability and the improvement of socioeconomic conditions in Cape Verde”.
