Africa-Press – Cape verde. The return of the Expomar, the Fair of Activities Related to the Sea, and the holding of an extension of the Cabo Verde Ocean Week (CVOW) in Boa Vista are the main new features of the 2024 edition of the event, which takes place from 3 to 9 November.
The programme was presented this Thursday, 31st, by the National Director of Marine Policy, Anísio Évora, who points to a space for dialogue to change mentalities in relation to the oceans.
“It is our duty, as a nation, to open a deep and fruitful dialogue to consolidate the implementation of environmental and ocean sustainability policies, develop strategies to raise awareness about the importance of the ocean and our seas, promote actions to prevent and reduce marine and maritime pollution and also implement strategies to reduce pollution by plastics and microplastics in our oceans. And, therefore, the Cabo Verde Ocean Week event, which takes place annually here in São Vicente, has been the, let’s say, privileged stage for this dialogue”, he states.
The programme includes thematic panels, namely on circular economy, marine sustainability, water sports, adaptation to climate change and climate resilience, as well as practical workshops on recycling and reusing materials, such as plastics and fishing nets, taking place under the motto “CVOW 2024 – The Voice of the Ocean”.
The person in charge recalls that the event’s main mission is to contribute to the discussion and presentation of preservation strategies and marine sustainability policies.
“This is because our survival depends on a change in mentality, that is, a change in mindset in relation to the ocean and the policies that have been implemented to ensure this sustainable exploitation of our oceans. Therefore, the stage of the Mindelo Oceanographic Centre, over the course of five days, will be open for this dialogue around the preservation and sustainability of the ocean”, he says.
Cabo Verde Ocean Week 2024 is expected to include a series of conferences with the participation of experts and decision-makers from Cabo Verde, Portugal, Morocco, the United States, Germany, Senegal, among other countries.
In addition to incorporating Expomar, which is celebrating its 11th edition this year, the programme for the 7th edition of CVOW includes Blue Talks, Podcasts and other activities.
As in the previous year, the fishing community of Salamansa will host the ‘Blue Food’ gastronomic festival, with tastings of seafood and community specialities.
