Africa-Press – Cape verde. Among the 90 illegal immigrants who washed ashore this Sunday, aboard a pirogue, on the island of Boa Vista, are 15 minors, aged between 14 and 17 years old, and three women. The pirogue left Gambia bound for Spain and was adrift for 25 days.

According to information released by the Maio City Council, the 90 migrants rescued alive this Sunday aboard a canoe, originated in Gambia, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Mali and Guinea-Conakry.

On Saturday, two male corpses had already been rescued, which also washed up on the coast aboard a pirogue, at the Morro Negro lighthouse.

Of the 90 survivors, among them are three women and 15 minors, aged between 14 and 17 years. Six require intensive care due to dehydration.

According to them, the vessel would have left Gambia for Spain, but they ran out of fuel and were adrift for 25 days at sea.

Majority of Senegalese nationality

Of the total rescued, 81 are at the Seixal Municipal Pavilion receiving daily care and under the protection of the CMBV and the National Police, and nine, including the three women, are at the island’s Health Center receiving intensive care.

In addition to 56 Senegalese, there are also 25 citizens from The Gambia, five from Guinea-Bissau, one from Sierra Leone, one from Guinea Conakry and one from Mali.

The alert, according to the CMBV, was given by a lighthouse keeper from Farol do Morro Negro who was on duty and who informed the authorities about a pirogue with clandestine emigrants.

The CMBV has already assured that it is mobilizing support resources, namely hygiene products, clothing, food products, among others, in order to offer comfort to immigrants, in this delicate moment.
