The holding of the first forum between Cape Verdean and Portuguese municipalities, to be held this year, in Cape Verde, was one of the recommendations of a meeting that took place, this Friday, in Lisbon, between the mayors of the Portuguese municipalities twinned with the archipelago.

The was an initiative of the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, who is on an official four-day visit to Portugal, at the invitation of his Portuguese counterpart, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Speaking to the press, the mayor of Oeiras, Isaltino Morais, twinned with the Municipality of São Vicente, highlighted the “very important” initiative, which shows the role that the President of the Republic of Cape Verde attributes to projects and actions. cooperation that can be carried out between Portuguese and Cape Verdean municipalities.

“One of the proposals that was born and sponsored by the President of the Republic is the holding of a first forum between Portuguese and Cape Verdean municipalities, in order to discuss and expand the participation of municipalities that have twinnings or cooperation actions with NGOs, associations or companies”, he said.

For Isaltino Morais, holding this first forum could be a “very important action, in the sense of being able to trigger a new cooperation model, in which it is possible to involve a group of municipalities in common projects”.

“The attention of cooperation projects in the area of ​​basic sanitation, in the area of ​​solid waste, water supply, among others, was drawn here and what often happens is that a Portuguese municipality develops a project with another municipality in Cabo. Verde, when it could have a much greater impact if perhaps there was a combination of efforts between the various municipalities”, he stressed.

In turn, the president of the Association of Municipalities of Cape Verde (ANMCV), Herménio Fernandes, confirmed the idea of ​​holding the forum, stressing that the municipalities “is a power closer to the people”, who know better the reality of each territory. .

“It will help us to relaunch the cooperation that already exists, but that needs to be reinforced”, he said, indicating that the purpose of the ANMCV is “to give the greatest possible visibility to the municipalities”.

The idea is to work on concrete projects, with impacts on territories, aiming to improve the competitiveness of municipalities and strengthen cooperation ties, emphasizing that this initiative opens new fronts for partnerships, taking into account that citizens have faced “enormous challenges” in several areas.

In addition to Isaltino Morais, the mayors of the municipal councils of Odivelas, Hugo Martins, da Moita, Carlos Albino, of Seixal, Joaquim Santos, and of Amadora, Carla Tavares, and the councilor for International Relations of the Municipality of Cascais, Francisco Kreye.

Also participating in the meeting were the vice-presidents of the municipal councils of Azambuja, António de Matos, of Vila Franca de Xira, Marina Tiago, of Lourinhã, José Tomé, of Sintra, Bruno Parreira and of Palmela, Luís Miguel Calha.
