Fogo/Carnival: Chamber increases subsidy by another 50 contos to groups that can access it after registration – councilor

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The São Filipe City Council increased the value attributed to carnival groups by another 50 thousand escudos, thus increasing from 150 to 200 escudos for each of the four groups.

The increase in the subsidy, which can be advanced from this week after the groups register, according to the councilor for Culture, Lia Barbosa, is due to the fact that the groups have “only a city subsidy” to begin the preparatory work.

Registration is still open and the culture council has already held several meetings with the four official groups in the city of São Filipe, namely Fantasia de Cobom, Mar Azul, Faxa da Terra and Fogo em Chama, but so far none of the groups have formalized the your registration.

“The groups are aware that to access the fund provided by the chamber the only criterion is to register”, said Lia Barbosa, highlighting that as soon as the group registers, they can request an advance from the fund, with the chamber making contacts for groups to sign up so there will be no delay in starting work.

Together with the local company Fogo Entertainment and official groups, the culture council held meetings to organize an off-season carnival ball with the aim of raising funds to help the groups, because, it recognized that only the 200 contos that the council available are not enough for groups to organize carnival.

The dance was supposed to take place in December, but due to the short space of time for publicity it was postponed to the first Sunday in which the groups take to the streets (last Sunday in January) to hold the dance, at the Armand Montrond Cultural Center in order to have more financial assistance for the groups.

Regarding the value of the prizes, the councilor said that it is not yet known whether or not it will increase because it depends on sponsorship.

Today, a training workshop on techniques for recovering batucada instruments begins at the Armand Montrond Cultural Center, the aim of which is to recover the batucada instruments of São Filipe’s carnival groups.

On the other hand, the culture council of the São Filipe council began on Monday, at the Armand Montrond Cultural Center, a 50-hour workshop, the aim of which is to recover discarded materials such as furniture, footwear, handcrafted pieces, among others, destined to artisans and young people who want to find a way of earning.

The workshop has the component of improving technique and mastery of the esmaril machine.
