Africa-Press – Cape verde. The training of fishermen from the four municipalities of the Fogo/Brava region under the “Guardians of the Sea” program, implemented by the Project Vitó Association, aims to create in each fisherman a sense of ownership of natural biological resources, explained the association.

The coordinator of the Sustainable Fishing Program of the Project Vitó Association, Andreia Leal, regarding the training that started in the municipality of São Filipe, involving 25 fishermen, said that in addition to creating the sense of ownership of resources, the “Guardians of the Sea” program intends to train and empower fishermen for surveillance and control of violations in their fishing areas, monitoring of marine species and fishing banks for the conservation of fish stocks and preservation of the marine environment.

The training of fishermen from the municipality of São Filipe ends on April 27th and has a workload of 60 hours, with modules on first aid, fishing-related legislation, fish preservation, financial education, and diving techniques.

In the first module related to first aid, aspects such as definition and function of first aid, attitudes to have when providing first aid, how to ask for help and act in the event of an accident were analyzed, with participating fishermen having the opportunity to work with more specific cases of accidents, such as injury, shock, bleeding, trauma, as well as sessions of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) in adults, children, and babies, techniques for clearing airways, how to lift an injured victim, burns, and poisoning.
