Africa-Press – Cape verde. The city of São Filipe hosted the ninth edition of the second traveling Cape Verde Book Fair at the Casa das Bandeiras, with the opening presided over by Mayor Nuías Silvas.
The book fair, revived in 2024 by the Ministry of Culture through the National Library Institute, continues to expand throughout the country and, this year, included three more municipalities that were not previously part of the circuit.
At the opening session of the São Filipe fair, which took place after the Mosteiros fair, the mayor of São Filipe, Nuías Silva, celebrated the event’s return to the city, highlighting its cultural impact.
“The book fair is an invitation to reconnect with reading habits and discover new authors. São Filipe rhymes with culture, and we need to reclaim these values,” declared the mayor.
Nuías Silva expressed his hope that the fair would encourage more reading circles and gatherings focused on literature to learn about the history of Fogo and Cape Verde, as well as world history.
He highlighted the municipality’s cultural dynamism, which already has a writers’ association, and pointed out that his municipality has a cultural agenda commensurate with its conditions, where art, culture, and literature take on practical dimensions.
As examples, he mentioned the annual Art Week and the institutionalization of two literary prizes, Dr. Teixeira de Sousa and Pedro Monteiro Cardoso.
Nuías Silva reinforced the need to expand access to books on Fogo Island and suggested that, in addition to the partnership with Casa das Bandeiras, Casa da Memória could become another point of sale and circulation of books in the city.
The president of the National Library, Matilde Santos, highlighted the importance of the initiative to democratize access to books and reinforce reading habits.
He also highlighted the historical contribution of Fogo Island to Cape Verdean literature, mentioning names such as Teixeira de Sousa and other authors native to São Filipe.
He also reinforced his desire to maintain collaboration with the City Hall, the Ministry of Education, and other local entities to promote literary production.
