Food in Praia prison: Director-general of prison services denies criticism and says it is in “normal standards”

Africa-Press – Cape verde. João Delgado, director general of Prison Services and Social Reintegration, clarified today that the measure banning food from outside in prisons will continue, to prevent access to psychotropic substances or any other prohibited object in prison establishments, refuting the criticisms that have arisen in the social networks about the quality of food at the beach chain.

This official clarified today in the press the news transmitted by the media, which were spread on social networks, about the food and health conditions of inmates in the central prison of Praia.

“We learned, including through social networks, that the food, according to the inmates, has not been satisfactory, which we do not understand, because it does not correspond to the truth, even because the inmates have a diet within normal standards”, he argued.

Meals

The same guaranteed that the detainees have three meals a day, that is, breakfast, lunch and dinner, and at breakfast they are sometimes offered tea, sometimes coffee with milk and sometimes just milk, according to the set menu. weekly.

At lunch, he said that a hot, fresh meal is always served, but he acknowledged that there are inmates who lack a diet due to health precautions.

“Some don’t eat meat, others don’t eat fish, anyway, several things, and there are others that sometimes, when the meal is fish, they don’t like the fish either, which we understand to be natural, normal, because at home there are also meals that we don’t like in terms of food”, he claimed.

Regarding those who follow a diet, he clarified that they do not go without food, because they are always guaranteed another option.

“Normal Patterns”

He also guaranteed that there is food in the prison in sufficient quantity and quality within normal standards.

“No inmate goes without food, none at all, what could happen is if they don’t want to eat that, we’re not actually going to force them, or else there are others who from time to time remember to go on hunger strike, which is something that between them is normal”, he reinforced.

This official reiterated, however, that the ban on the entry of food brought by families into the establishment will remain, a measure adopted with the pandemic.

According to him, the measure is to prevent them from taking advantage of the entrance of these foods to take psychotropic substances or any other object prohibited from entering prison establishments.

“And the living proof of this is that just yesterday we made an arrest in the central prison of Praia, of a lady who tried to introduce illicit substances inside a sneaker in the prison”, he exemplified.

Water

Regarding the circulation of some images of water bottles in prison establishments, of which the inmates allegedly say that it is water they consume, he also says that it is not true.

“To start with, these water bottles, they fill them and use them as if they were dumbbells, to do the training, this water is conditioned inside the container for a few days and ends up gaining another color”, he explained.

Regarding health, he stressed that all inmates have a complaint, noting that their transport to the hospital lacks resources, namely agents, which “there are not many”, to guarantee safety during the journey.

This source also said that many complain of illness so that when they are taken to hospitals, they can take the opportunity to flee.

In prison, he guaranteed, health conditions are offered to inmates.
