Government and Sindep disagree on the indefinite strike announced by Sindprof

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The National Teachers’ Union (Sindep) today separated itself from the indefinite teachers’ strike announced by Sindprof, claiming that it did not have time to consult the class, while the Government said it respected this form of struggle.

These were, according to Inforpress, the reactions of the president of Sindep, Jorge Cardoso, and the Minister of Education, Amadeu Cruz, regarding the beginning of a strike for an indefinite period, initiated today by the Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sindprof) due to lack of agreement with the Ministry of Education on the demands linked to the salary increase.

For Sindprof, the strike, for an indefinite period, aims to make the Ministry of Education respect the class and resolve the teacher’s problem, from changing levels to salary updates.

According to him, the proposal requesting a salary increase from 78,678 escudos to 107,471 escudos in base salary was not accepted at the last meeting with the Ministry of Education and Directorate-General for Labor.

Amadeu Cruz, who was speaking to journalists at the end of the meeting he held this morning with Sindep, stressed that strike is the right of every citizen and that the Government respects this form of struggle.

According to Inforpress, the government official reiterated that the proposal presented by Sindprof to increase the salary to 107 thousand escudos, an increase of 36%, has a huge impact on the State budget.

However, he assured that the Government has always been available to work with all unions and expressed openness to continue dialogue and reach an understanding that allows the stability of the educational system and motivates teachers.

For his part, the president of Sindep, Jorge Cardoso, highlighted that the union unconditionally supports all forms of teachers’ struggles, but stressed that they did not get to hear the class about the strike for an indefinite period , announced by Sindprof.

“ We are coming out of a two-day strike that took place in November, and we have to do our homework, which is to listen to teachers and outline the next stage of the struggle. At the time, we didn’t think it was reasonable to call a strike without consulting the teachers ,” he pointed out.

According to Sindprof, teachers also ask for the completion of reclassifications, automatic promotion, regularization of the granting of subsidies for non-reduction in workload until 2024, improvement of the careers of masters, doctors and university professors, regularization of the careers of kindergarten teachers , regularization of the teacher transition process and review of the Teaching Staff Career Statute.

At the moment, students are on holiday for the Christmas and New Year period, with the start of classes scheduled for January 3, 2023, recalls the source of this newspaper.
