Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Prime Minister, José Ulisses Correia e Silva, used social networks to provide his support and solidarity to the relatives of the military victims, following the accident with an Armed Forces vehicle, on the way to Serra da Malagueta, yesterday afternoon.
On his Facebook page, Ulisses Correia e Silva confirmed that the Government had decided to decree two days of National Mourning in memory of the victims and added that the Government was available to provide full support to the victims’ families.
The Prime Minister said he was monitoring this tragic situation, and expressed, on behalf of the Government of Cape Verde, total solidarity with the family members and the Armed Forces institution.
“Our concerns and wishes for the recovery of the injured, some in a serious condition, including an employee of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment”, reads at the end of the publication by the Head of State.
The accident
In total, there were 32 soldiers in the truck that overturned, eight of whom ended up losing their lives and more than 20 are still hospitalized, when they went to support the fire in Serra Malagueta, which still has an active front in the Monte Semedo area.
The possible causes behind this tragic road accident have yet to be officially identified.
There is still a burning front

On the ground, according to the Municipality of Tarrafal, is the Fire Department of all the municipalities of the island of Santiago, Civil Protection Service, Armed Forces, and the general population, who are “tirelessly” acting in the fight against the fire, that has been consuming since yesterday, April 1st, the vast area of Serra Malagueta.
The fire started on the afternoon of Saturday, 1st, with two fronts in Serra Malagueta and Figueira das Naus, the alleged author of the arson is a male individual from the community of Serra Malagueta, who is currently being held at the police station in Santa Catarina.
