Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Government has ensured that it has taken all policy measures to ensure effective gender equality among Cape Verdean and that the archipelago asserts itself as a democratic and plural country.
This position was taken to the press on Tuesday by the Minister of Family and Social Inclusion, Fernando Elísio Freire, at the official opening of the Arts Exhibition “Free to Be Who I Am”, promoted in the Ildo Lobo Culture Palace by the United Nations system, within the scope of the implementation of the Free & Equal Campaign (Free & Equal).
According to the ruler, it is the obligation of the State to accept everyone, regardless of their sexual, political or regional options.
“We have to be aware that a society is only truly inclusive when it includes everyone. Human beings are men, women who have their sexual choices, politics, regional… It is the obligation of one State, it is the obligation of all of us, to be tolerant, to accept and live quietly in a society with rules,” he said.
It considered this orientation very important, in order to respect the Constitution of the Republic, that is, to make everyone feel like Cape Verde a country where democracy and freedom are breathed.
Considering that Cape Verdean society respects democracy and freedom, the ruler has said that the country must do everything to make democracy more and more thriving, integrating, respectful and free, without any discrimination by the political, sexual or any kind of choice.
The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System, Patrícia Portela de Souza, said that the initiative has a range of partners such as the Government who joined in order to demonstrate the potential art of the LGBTQIA+ community in Cape Verde.
He admitted that this community often suffers discrimination and that they are not having access to all the opportunities and experiences that are entitled, which is why, attested, the idea is precisely to open this space for this interaction and above all to do the advocacy of their talents through art.
The United Nations campaign for the LGBTQIA+ community runs from 16 to 18 of the current, and aims to “celebrate freedom and diversity through art and show how this can be a powerful tool of expression in combating negative stereotypes, by promoting a culture of better understanding of diversity in a pluralistic society.
Launched on 26 July 2013, Livres & Equals is referenced as a United Nations campaign under the coordination of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
It is a global education campaign for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality, focused on raising awareness of violence and homophobic and transphobic discrimination and promoting greater respect for the rights of LGBTQIA+ people everywhere in the world.
The exhibition of Arts “Free to Be Who I Am” is marked by a set of activities, involving the LGBTQIA+ community through fashion, jewelry, crafts, literature, fine arts, gastronomy, photography and performances of artists or groups and other forms of artistic expression.
