Government warns NGOs to avoid temptation to make environmental preservation “a own business”

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of the Sea warned on Monday, in Mindelo, the Non-governmental Organizations (NGO) for the incompatibility that is the practice and conjunction of activities related to environmental preservation and sustainability with commercial activities.

Abraão Vicente, who was speaking at the opening of the 1st Artisanal Fishing Week in Cabo Verde, organized by the Biosphere, in partnership with FAO and the Economia Azul Association based in Portugal, stressed that “it is essential” the NGOs avoid the temptation to make environmental preservation and sustainability “a own business”.

“We as a country will be attentive to all practices, and in the near future we will certainly increase oversight so that it is clear that the environmental preservation area is responsability of the State and the Republic of Cabo Verde,” said the Minister of the Sea, for whom all other forms of management and co-management will have to be “shared and concerted”, within what are the laws of the Republic.

“Therefore, for the best results there must be a deep consultation within the institutional frameworks of the laws the country establishes for the NGOs practice and function”, he stressed.
