Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cape Verdean basketball players Ivan Almeida and Betinho Gomes became national champions of Portugal, for Sport Lisboa Benfica, by beating Sporting, in game four, by 101-85, and closing the final with 3-1.
Benfica had beaten the opposing team, two days before, by 101-57, in the third game of the ‘play-offs’, and by 85-84 in the first game, with Sporting winning the second game by 93-87.
The title of two-time champion of Portugal was won on Sunday night.
Benfica had already won the Portuguese Cup this season.
Two-time champions refused to receive the trophy at the João Rocha pavilion
Benfica did not receive the trophy for the 29th title of national champion at the João Rocha Pavilion, in protest with the Portuguese Basketball Federation and the respective Disciplinary Council.
“Sport Lisboa e Benfica informs that the two-time national champions will not participate in the official ceremony to hand over the national champion trophy, given the discriminatory and unacceptable behavior on the part of the Portuguese Basketball Federation and its Disciplinary Council, chaired by Carlos Filipe” , justified in a statement.
The team also added that “the two-time champions will celebrate winning this championship with Benfica fans at the Fidelidade Pavilion at Estádio da Luz, which will have its doors open to receive all fans”.
