Africa-Press – Cape verde. Superintendent Jorge Humberto Andrade was sworn in today as the new National Director of the National Police, in a ceremony presided over by the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva.

During his speech, the head of the Government highlighted that public safety continues to be one of the country’s top priorities and stressed the need to strengthen prevention, ensure greater police presence in communities and adopt a firm response to incivility that compromises citizens’ peace of mind.

“Small everyday behaviours can fuel more serious violence. We must take these issues seriously”, he warned.

On the occasion, Ulisses Correia e Silva also welcomed the outgoing Superintendent-General, Emanuel Estalino Moreno, praising the work carried out during a period marked by investments in the valorisation of the Police.

Ulisses Correia e Silva reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to work with a focus on prevention, social action and the fight against crime.

He also advocated effective coordination between the National Police, the Judicial Police, the judicial system and social partners.

Among the challenges that will continue to deserve special attention, the Prime Minister highlighted the fight against gender-based violence (GBV), alcohol and drug use, as well as the reintegration of ex-prisoners into society.
