Africa-Press – Cape verde. José Filomeno Monteiro, Cape Verde’s ambassador to Brussels and to the European Union, will be the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, replacing Rui Figueiredo Soares, a source close to the Government told Lusa today.
The change in the team led by Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva and supported by the parliamentary majority of the MpD, should happen next week, but there is still no date set for the inauguration.
The appointment is expected to be published in the Official Gazette so that the inauguration can then be conferred by the President of the Republic.
Eight years ago, José Filomeno took up the post of Cape Verde’s ambassador to Belgium, assuming the same functions to the European Union (EU), in what is considered by the Government to be one of the most important and priority diplomatic representation posts for the country.
The diplomat was a member of parliament elected by Santiago Sul.
The change at the top of the diplomatic corps comes two months after the last change in the Government.
In August, Jorge Santos was appointed Minister of the Sea (combining it with Minister of Communities) and Augusto Veiga took over as Minister of Culture and Creative Industries, roles previously held by Abraão Vicente, who, in the meantime, ran for the municipality of Praia in the December local elections.
