José Maria Neves made this statement in an interview on the program “Washington Fora d’Horas”, by Voz da América, in which he spoke about the Presidency in the Diaspora, which he has been carrying out since March 31 and which ends today.
“We are preparing, to see if still within this mandate it will be possible to make a State visit to the United States of America”, revealed Neves when asked when a State visit, considering that the last date is April 21, 1989.
The Head of State recalled that during the management of “President Aristides Pereira there was an active role for Cape Verde in the peace negotiations in Southern Africa, which led to the emancipation of Angola, the independence of Namibia and the democratization of South Africa”.
Neves wants to strengthen relations with the US
The nation’s highest judge added that, although relations are “very good, intense”, at the moment “from a political point of view, from a geostrategic point of view, relations are not so intense, but there are very strong economic relations, there are political concertation in the international arena”.
Neves also recalled that “many visits have been exchanged” and now with the United States “relationships in the field of defense and security will be strengthened”.
