Africa-Press – Cape verde. The delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in Boa Vista, suspects that African swine fever is the cause of the death of the pigs, on the island, and criticized the city hall for not moving forward with the municipal pigsty.
In an interview with the press about the deaths of pigs in the pigsty located in the industrial area of Sal Rei, the MAA delegate, Xisto Baptista, reported on the institution’s suspicions.
“According to the veterinarian of this delegation, it is suspected that it is an outbreak of African swine fever and we have collected samples for laboratory analysis,” the delegate informed.
Xisto Batista also stated that the pigsties are not suitable for carrying out this activity.
“Those sheet metal pigpens are not suitable for carrying out this activity because they do not have the minimum hygienic and sanitary conditions. It is also noted that this is not the first time that animals have died and there have been fires on these pig farms,” he declared.
The delegate also said that it is the city hall’s responsibility to organize the pigsties on the island, remembering that the ministry has already made resources available for this.
“The MAA spoke with the Boa Vista City Council, designed the project and registered it for financing, through the Environment Fund, but this did not go ahead due to a clear lack of interest from the City Council”, stated Xisto Baptista.
The delegate concluded by saying that the ministry recommends the consumption of pork duly certified by the veterinary service and guaranteed that they will take the necessary measures to prevent the spread of the disease, both on the island and to other islands.
