Africa-Press – Cape verde. International Master Mariano Ortega, representing the Equipe Ribeira Funda Sports Organization (ODERF) from Sal Island, retained his title as National Individual Absolute Chess Champion this Sunday.
The information was given to Inforpress by the representative of the Cape Verdean Chess Federation, Manuel Medina, who gave an “extremely positive” assessment of the IX National Individual Absolute Championship (CNIA 2025), which took place in Mindelo.
“Since yesterday we already knew who the champion was. Although one round remains, Mariano Ortega is already champion. Now, regarding the other classifications, we don’t know yet. Only after the 9th and final round will we know who will be in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and other positions,” he explained.
According to Manuel Medina, the competition proceeded smoothly and in an atmosphere of “great fair play”.
“We must acknowledge that all the players were committed to this competition. We had no difficulty in monitoring the championship and resolving any problems that arose, so I am pleased with the participants, who stood out for their high level of fair play,” he added.
The same source highlighted the participation of young people in the competition, emphasizing that the federation has been working with schools, but has also been preparing associations to promote this sport within educational institutions.
“Young people with some ability are emerging, and that is important because you can only establish chess if you work with young people,” he concluded, according to Inforpress.
