Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Municipality of Mosteiros honors the artisan Tony di Kilda, who died in 2016, by attributing his name to the Municipal Handicraft Prize (PMA), established in 2022.
Through its official page on social networks, the Ministry of Culture of the City Hall of Mosteiros justifies the attribution of the name of the prize to the deceased craftsman, as a way of honoring one of the “most renowned and multifaceted” craftsmen of Mosteiros.
The decision to assign the craftsman’s name to the handicraft prize took place on the same day that the Ministry of Culture shared the rules for the prize with the artisans of the municipality of Mosteiros.
Valuing artistic ability and encouraging craft production
The Tony di Kilda Municipal Handicraft Prize aims to be a factor in the social and cultural appreciation of all artisans in Mosteiros, as well as enhancing technical and professional skills, as well as artistic ability.
On the other hand, the council intends, with the institutionalization of the award, to encourage craft production in its various forms, but also aims to recognize the craft sector as one of the sectors of local culture with the potential to promote the sustainability of employment associated with the culture market.
The regulation emphasizes that all artisans who carry out the activity individually or in a group, who are born or live in Mosteiros, for at least six months, can apply for the PMA Tony di Kilda, and each competitor or group of competitors can only present a job for the contest.
Nominations and awards
The candidacy for the PMA Tony di Kilda must be presented from the 17th of February to the 8th of March and the choice of the winner will take place in two phases, the first in which the ten best works will be selected by the judges and the second through public voting on the official page from the Câmara dos Mosteiros, on Facebook or on another platform indicated by the organization.
The quality of execution, aesthetics and design, genuineness and authenticity, identity value, creativity and materials used are the main evaluation criteria, with the jury paying special attention to productions that value sustainability concepts, encouraging recycling and promoting protection ideas environmental.
The winner of the PMA will receive a diploma and a trophy, participation in the Cape Verde Handicraft Fair (URDI) financed by the organization and partners, and a monetary value to be defined by the organization, depending on the funding mobilized for the present edition of the award.
