Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Movement for Democracy (MpD), José Ulisses Correia e Silva, said that the focus is on the transformation of the country.

Ulisses Correia e Silva made these statements at the commemoration of the MpD’s 36th anniversary, which took place at the University of Cape Verde in Praia.

He highlighted the MpD’s role in consolidating democracy in Cape Verde, defending the need to strengthen democratic institutions in the face of current challenges.

According to the leader of the ruling party, the MpD’s trajectory has been decisive in consolidating the country as a prestigious and internationally recognized democracy.

The MpD leader said that over the last few decades Cape Verde has joined the group of democratic countries and has become a reference in Africa and the world, with important achievements in terms of freedom and political participation.

“What is happening in the world draws our attention to the fact that democracy is a construction of women and men, of institutions and of society itself,” he stated, underlining the importance of preserving the democratic rule of law, good governance, and institutional stability.

According to Ulisses Correia Silva, these factors, although often considered intangible, translate into concrete benefits for the country, such as citizen confidence, a good external reputation, the attraction of investments, and the strengthening of international partnerships.

The ambition is for a “perfect democracy,” he emphasized.

Ulisses Correia e Silva acknowledged, however, that Cape Verde is still an imperfect democracy, arguing that the country must work to raise the quality of its democratic system.

“We have the ambition to reach a perfect democracy, although we know that few countries have reached that level,” he stated, recalling that a large part of the world’s population lives under autocratic regimes.
