José Eduardo Moreno, a representative of the Movement for Democracy (MpD, in power), today emphasized the importance of the government’s education policies for the daily lives of Cape Verdean students, teachers, and families, emphasizing the social impact of the measures implemented in the sector.
At a press conference to review the parliamentary proceedings, the first plenary session of this month, which marks the beginning of the new parliamentary year, the representative emphasized that education is a priority for the MpD and that recent reforms have contributed to creating a safer, more dignified, and motivating school environment.
José Eduardo Moreno highlighted the government’s investments in the education sector, indicating that the 2025/26 school year began “completely normally,” with approximately 130,000 students and 7,700 active teachers.
Among the notable measures, the congressman cited the increase in the number of scholarships, the restriction on cell phone use in classrooms, and the implementation of the new Position, Function, and Remuneration Plan (PCFR), which, according to him, “brought updated salaries, effective promotions, and motivation to the teaching profession.”
He also highlighted the “most profound curricular reform in the country’s history,” already completed, and the “significant progress” in the enrollment rate, which reached 99 percent in elementary school and 70 percent in high school.
The congressman also highlighted the renovation of more than 360 schools and the improvement of school infrastructure, with an investment of over 2.7 million contos.
“While the opposition tries to point out specific cases, the Government looks to hundreds of renovated schools that now welcome students with dignity,” he said.
The congressman took the opportunity to congratulate teachers on International Teachers’ Day (October 6), highlighting the Government’s efforts to improve salaries, working conditions, and careers. teachers.
José Eduardo Moreno also recalled the progress made in providing scholarships and reducing school dropout rates, emphasizing that these actions have a direct impact on families’ lives.
According to the representative, the first plenary session in October will focus on debates on education and questions to the Government about tourism and transportation, demonstrating the MpD’s continued attention to areas that directly affect the population’s well-being.
When asked about expectations for the new parliamentary year, José Eduardo Moreno reaffirmed the MpD’s desire to promote dialogue and consensus, and acknowledged that there are challenges in areas such as energy, while ensuring that he has “confidence in the Government’s ability to normalize the situation, as happened with the transportation sector.”
