Africa-Press – Cape verde. After Óscar Santos, there is now the name of Jacinto Santos, another former mayor, as a putative competitor to the Câmara da Praia. The NATION knows that there are moves to convince him to lead an independent candidacy. Approached, he says that he only accepts to participate in the search for an alternative solution, of “citizens”, in favor of his hometown.
An “independent” candidacy of Jacinto Santos for the Praia Chamber is in the making, in the 2024 municipal elections. of personalities from various political parties and sectors of activity.
According to one of our interlocutors, Jacinto Santos “enjoys great sympathy with the Municipality’s staff and workers, and is also cherished by the people of Praia for the work he carried out in the housing sector as mayor of Praia”.
Added to this is also citizen action as a promoter and leader of non-profit civil society organizations (associations, NGOs, foundations and cooperatives), with young people, women heads of families and local communities, neighborhoods and towns in
the municipality of Praia”.
As an added value of this former mayor, the promoters of this candidacy highlight the fact that he is recognized in the country as “one of the best specialists” in social and solidarity economy.
“He has a solid knowledge of municipal management and administration, local economic development, a great capacity for leadership, organization, communication and argumentation, as well as a solid political capacity”, emphasizes our interlocutor, on behalf of his peers. .
For Jacinto Santos supporters, he is also seen as a person of “easy, respectful and simple dialogue with people and is, without a doubt, a public figure with a great history of participation in the political and social life of the country ”.
If with such parchments Santos takes a stand, the scenario of the municipal elections in the capital in 2024 may change its figure, taking into account the persistence of a political and institutional environment characterized by a high level of tension and conflict, breach of trust and legal uncertainty by businessmen and investors, “with manifest damage to the population and the development of the municipality”.
Jacinto thanks you, but…
However, if that is the desire of the referred citizens, the same does not happen with the target, Jacinto Santos. To A NAÇÃO he thanks, firstly, the recognition, “if in fact there is a group of citizens” who want to see him back at the CMP, after 23 years away from the CMP. “I’m happy, but that was never my political project, to return to Praia Chamber”.
However, he also admits, “if a group of people appears, a movement with a civic project, as an alternative to the Câmara da Praia, I will be willing to make my contribution”.
Santos hints that he is not aligned, at this moment, with either the MpD or the PAICV. As he says, “one (the PAICV) for its active practice” and the other (MpD) “with a position of waiting and seeing”.
As is well known, despite the split in 2000 with the MpD, the party he helped found in 1990, when he was elected president of the CMP (1991-2000), Jacinto Santos maintained cordial relations and some political collaboration, while that with the PAICV the distancing is by far more flagrant. He supported
the MpD in several elections and in the last presidential elections he supported Carlos Veiga.
Regardless of that, he underlines, “Câmara da Praia is currently experiencing a serious problem of trampling democracy. The Chamber is a democratic institution, which cannot be managed according to the mood of those in front of it”, he says, referring to Francisco Carvalho, from the PAICV.
In short, concludes Jacinto Santos, “if a citizens’ movement appears, defending a democratic development project for Praia, my city and municipality, I will support it, without problems, but never as a leader or head of the list”.
Óscar, Beta, Freire…
The appearance now of the name of Jacinto Santos for the municipal horizon of 2024 happens almost a month after this newspaper has advanced in edition 811 (March 23) the name of Óscar Santos to, he, too, return to the CMP, as a candidate of the MpD in 2024. Alberto Melo (Beta) and Fernando Elísio Freire are other equally popular names.
Obviously, this search for a solution for the CMP, in the fan family, denotes some concern on the part of the sectors that are close to them. In a word, by all indications, the MpD is still far from having found the solution for the country’s main chamber.
On the PAICV side, even with the situation of a certain ungovernability in the CMP, with management turned its back on the tambarina leadership, no candidacy is in sight to face Francisco Carvalho.
