OMCV Advisor Discusses Women's Empowerment Role

Africa-Press – Cape verde. OMCV advisor Hermínia Curado highlighted today in Praia the important role that this organization has played over the years in promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality in the country.

Hermínia Curado, speaking at the opening of the celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Organization of Women of Cape Verde (OMCV), stressed that, over more than four decades, the OMCV has developed initiatives that encompass not only women but also families, encouraging the use of opportunities to improve living conditions.

According to her, the focus on economic autonomy and inclusion has contributed to significant changes in the well-being of Cape Verdean women and their communities.

Hermínia Curado expressed pride in her trajectory within the organization, highlighting projects aimed at empowering women and girls and promoting entrepreneurship, indicating that training and technical assistance have been “crucial to the success” of micro and small businesses led by women, contributing to the reduction of gender inequalities.

The OMCV advisor also praised the role of the organization’s governing bodies, members, and staff, whose actions have ensured close contact with Cape Verdean women, including in symbolic moments, strengthening institutional ties, as well as partnerships with women entrepreneurs, who have encouraged new generations to embrace business and innovation opportunities.

In turn, the former President of the Republic, Pedro Pires, greeted Cape Verdean women on their day and considered that the date should be a moment of reflection on the organization’s journey.

Pedro Pires stated that, today, instead of flowers, he chose to offer “hope” as a gift to women and Cape Verdean society, emphasizing that, in a global context of uncertainty, it is fundamental to believe in overcoming difficulties.

Regarding the OMCV, Pedro Pires recalled that it was created in 1975, in a markedly patriarchal society, with the objective of promoting the emancipation of women and reforming social, legal, and cultural structures that limited their rights.

Among the achievements, he highlighted the consolidation of a secular state and the revision of legislation, particularly in the field of family, allowing greater autonomy for women in accessing work, justice, and entrepreneurial activity.

The former Head of State stressed, however, that social transformation is a continuous process that requires the contribution of several generations, defending the need to consolidate and deepen the achievements already attained.

In his final message, he called for an inclusive approach to development, rejecting the idea of division between men and women, and advocated for the recovery of hope in an international scenario marked by tensions, based on values, attitudes, and respect for human rights.

It should be noted that the celebrations of the 45th anniversary of the OMCV include panel discussions on the organization’s trajectory, the challenges faced, and the impact of financial autonomy on women’s independence in Cape Verde.
