Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Order of Doctors, Danielson Veiga, admitted today that the difficulties of inter-island transport have made it difficult to provide medical care in Cape Verde, with deaths having already been recorded.

Danielson Veiga says that the problem of inter-island transport in the country is “chronic”, given that medical assistance in Cape Verde has two central hospitals and four regional ones.

“There are islands without a regular frequency of transport and the sick are often stranded on the islands. If someone needs a cesarean they may not have access to a quality service and if there is a delay it could be fatal,” she said.

He adds: “We have already had situations where a person was not diagnosed in time with an internal hemorrhage, on one of the islands” and was transported by boat, ending up dying on the way.

The most serious cases are treated via medical evacuation, especially to Portugal, depending on air transport, an area in which Cape Verde has experienced successive difficulties in recent times, exacerbated by the covid-19 pandemic.

It is recalled that a young emigrant, aged 13, died recently after several constraints registered in the evacuation from Brava to Fogo. The Brava health police station, however, refuted that the death was due to the constraints in the evacuation, claiming that the case was “serious” and that the young man arrived still alive at the Hospital do Fogo.
