PAICV Seeks Parliamentary Probe into Santiago Power Outages

Africa-Press – Cape verde. PAICV parliamentary leader Clóvis Silva said today that the party will request the National Assembly to open a parliamentary investigation to determine the causes and responsibilities for the successive power outages on Santiago Island, and he assured that the parliamentary group will use all available means to obtain answers.

Clóvis Silva was speaking to the press during the parliamentary session’s review. “We’re talking about bringing political issues to the parliamentary debate, questioning, debating, and utilizing the existing parliamentary investigative tools to verify this information. There are things they’re not telling us,” he said.

“If there’s maintenance, we want to see the plan and know if it was followed. If there are cash flow problems, we want to know what they are. We want to speak frankly with Cape Verdeans,” he emphasized.

The political leader warned of the economic impacts of the energy crisis and considered that small and medium-sized businesses are being hit the hardest.

“Small and medium-sized businesses are truly desperate, because no one imagines that, when investing in a small business, they have to be prepared for a power outage. We assume that our production factors are guaranteed, and energy is an essential asset. There is a law that establishes this, and it must be treated as such,” he recalled.

For Clóvis Silva, the current situation reflects a systemic problem in planning, maintenance, and financial management. He also questioned the information provided by Electra’s management, noting that there are contradictory data between the announced profits and the government support granted.

“We recently heard Electra’s administrative manager say that there was a profit of over R$300,000. However, the government has just granted a R$600,000 guarantee to the same company. Something is wrong, some information is not correct,” he emphasized.
