Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Health announced this Wednesday in parliament, in Praia, that the country will receive the first batch of dengue vaccines in the first half of November in order to combat the disease. Filomena Gonçalves made the announcement during her speech to close the question to the Government about the national health system, proposed by the PAICV. “It is with great satisfaction that I announce that in the first half of November, Cape Verde will receive the first batch of dengue vaccines. A historic achievement for our country, as it is the first time that the dengue vaccine will be administered in the country,” she rejoiced. She maintained that the initiative is “proof of the Government’s unwavering commitment” to the health and safety of all Cape Verdeans. According to the same source, the Government has monitored and committed all resources to control and combat this epidemic, with health teams mobilized, awareness campaigns and preventive actions implemented throughout the country. However, she urged that the Executive cannot fight this battle alone and needs everyone’s involvement, with each person playing a role in this battle, avoiding mosquito breeding sites and taking precautions. Filomena Gonçalves also sent some messages to the other parties and stressed that dengue and health “are not spaces for party politics”. She believes that at this time, “more than ever”, it is necessary to appeal to everyone’s responsibility, because “public health cannot be manipulated to create unfounded fears, nor to sow doubts and distrust”. The minister recalled that the country has already faced several challenges in the sector and dengue is yet another case. “Together we will overcome the dengue outbreak and any other threat to the health of Cape Verdeans”, she said. In general, the same source explained, “Cape Verde has a proven credible health system, with high levels of trust among the population, as evidenced by the most recent studies, including GPS studies, which place the country’s public health system as one of the best rated in the region”.
During her speech, the Minister of Health also listed some investments in infrastructure and projects to be implemented in the future, including the central medicines storage facility, which, she assured, will begin in January 2025.
“This is our mission and, therefore, we need everyone. Only together can we build the health care that Cape Verde deserves, a dignified, humane and quality public health system”, she stated.
