Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Movement for Democracy congratulated the women’s and men’s national football teams on Thursday for qualifying for the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 World Cup, respectively, highlighting the achievements as an “inspiring milestone” and a source of pride for Cape Verde.
During a political statement in the National Assembly, Deputy Aniceto Barbosa stressed that October 13th and 28th, 2025 “will be marked as moments of national affirmation,” especially in a year in which the country celebrates 50 years of its independence.
“Cape Verde has reaffirmed itself as a nation capable of achieving remarkable feats, projecting its flag on the biggest stages of African and world football,” observed the deputy from the Movement for Democracy (MpD, ruling party).
The parliamentarian argued that this double qualification – male and female – symbolizes the country’s “sporting maturity” and commitment to equal opportunities, proving that Cape Verdean talent “has no gender.”
“We have shown the world that we are a small nation in territory, but immense in achievements and values. And that, united within and beyond our islands, there is no goal we cannot reach,” he declared.
According to Aniceto Barbosa, these results are not the product of chance, but of a “long-term national sports project,” supported by strategic vision and professionalism, involving the Government, sports authorities, and Cape Verdean communities.
The parliamentarian emphasized that the recent successes reflect improvements in sports infrastructure and the strengthening of local clubs, driven by funding programs, technical training, and strategic support from the Government, through the Institute of Sport and Youth (IDJ) and the Cape Verdean Football Federation (FCF).
For the deputy, this joint effort demonstrates that sport is a crucial instrument for social cohesion, health promotion, and youth development, as well as being an “engine of social and economic development.”
Aniceto Barbosa concluded that this dual qualification should be seen as a “catalyst for the structural strengthening of national sport,” with a direct impact on the training and professionalization of local structures.
