Renovation Works on Praia Markets will Begin Soon - PAICV

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The renovation works on the municipal markets of the capital, namely Sucupira and Platô, in the city of Praia, will begin soon, announced the municipal deputy of the PAICV, Milena Alfama, this Thursday.

The elected official was speaking to the press on the sidelines of a visit by the municipal bench of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), which manages the Praia municipality, to the Praia Municipal Public Supply Service (SEPAMP).

According to Milena Alfama, the interventions include the replacement of damaged roofs, repair of leaks and painting of the Platô market, in addition to the installation of a new roof on Avenida Cidade de Lisboa, where vendors will now sell their wares permanently, avoiding the difficulties they face on Sundays.

“We are going to replace the roofs in the areas where clothes and furniture are sold, repair the leaks, and paint the Platô market. We will also cover the area where the vendors work on Avenida Cidade de Lisboa, to give them better conditions,” explained Milena Freitas Alfama, emphasizing that the works should take place “as soon as possible.”

The congresswoman also assured that the PAICV caucus is closely monitoring the situation and has already communicated the needs to the Praia City Hall.

Milena Alfama recalled that since 2020, economic relief measures have been introduced for the vendors, highlighting the 50 percent (%) reduction in fees at the Sucupira market, from R$ 8,000 to R$ 4,000, and at the Platô market, where the fee fell from over R$ 3,000 to R$ 500.

The congresswoman acknowledged, however, that the Sucupira market “needs in-depth work,” since the “impasse remains” since the sale of the space in 2011, and that it is necessary to “mobilize financial resources” for a more profound intervention.

In turn, the director of SEPAMP, José Carlos Varela, considered that the meeting with the municipal elected officials was important to address the points raised on the ground and define investment priorities.

“SEPAMP is a sector that has practically stood still, but we are starting to revitalize it. It is a complicated sector that requires very large investments,” he said, adding that the requalification of the markets is the main challenge, to be carried out in phases.

According to José Carlos Varela, the roofing of the Sucupira market alone represents an estimated cost of between R$ 400 million and R$ 600 million, a figure that illustrates the scale of the necessary works.

“Nevertheless, we have already done a lot in terms of clearing canals, waterways and sanitation, as a way of gradually providing solutions,” he concluded.
