Pedro Pires appears as a “solidarity internationalist and diplomat for liberation” – The book’s host

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The University professor Odair Varela noted on Thursday that Pedro Pires appears in the book “Comandante Pedro Pires: Memory of the anticolonial struggle in Guinea-Bissau and the construction of the Republic of Cabo Verde”, as a “solidarity internationalist and diplomat for liberation”.

The work, presented this afternoon in the City of Praia, is the result of a conversation between Pedro Pires and a research team from the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGT), Brazil, led by Professor Celso Castro and a long process of collecting the history of the commander’s life.

According to Odair Varela, the book’s host, during the liberation struggle Pedro Pires demonstrated as a diplomat for liberation to get military support from the Soviet Union and other countries, without mortuing the future of Guinea-Bissau and Cabo Verde.

“This liberation diplomacy was evident by the way Pedro Pires stood before the president of Portugal at the time, General Spínola, with great diplomatic dignity,” he noted.
