Portugal: AdSumus defends empathy as the best way to help immigrants integrate

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Association of Immigrants of Almada (AdSumus) considers that the best way to help in the integration of those who choose Portugal to live, study and work is through empathy and “putting yourself in the other’s shoes”.

Inforpress went to the association’s headquarters for the work it has been doing since its creation on November 20, 2014, and spoke with the founders, all of Cape Verdean origin, Denise Almeida Silva and Lígia Almeida, who were once President of AdSumus, and Stella Lima, current President of the Board of the Assembly of the organization.

The three explained that before creating AdSumus, they already worked in other associations that had joint projects in 2009, so, after these associations were unable to pursue their goals, they decided to set up Adsumus with the aim of helping others.

“Our role in the integration of immigrants in Almada, in particular, and Portugal, in general, is to put ourselves in the other’s shoes, at least, what many immigrants go through. We know that integration is in its entirety”, considered Denise Almeida Silva, who currently works as a mediator for the Local Support Center for the Integration of Migrants (CLAIM) at AdSumus.
