Africa-Press – Cape verde. José Maria Neves, President of the Republic, warned yesterday that violence and insecurity in the city of Praia had reached “dramatic” levels, being “extremely worrying”.
“Crime in Praia City is reaching “dramatic” levels, the situation is “extremely” worrying and my appeal, as President of the Republic, is to mobilize all the efforts of the Government, the local authority, companies, non-governmental organizations, churches to create a culture of peace and non-violence”, he appealed, quoted by Inforpress.
The head of State also warned that more means and more equipment are needed, above all for the police to be able to perform, with higher operational levels, their role in repressing the crime that plagues the city of Praia.
Christmas and New Year Operation
It should be remembered that, on Friday, the 16th, the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) criticized the Government for implementing only “one-off programs” to combat crime, and a day earlier, the Regional Command of Santiago Sul and May (CRSSM) of the National Police (PN) started the Christmas/New Year security operation, with around 500 personnel.
In addition to these 500 professionals, there is also a daily reinforcement of 60 trainees from the 18th Training Course for Police Officers, who will help with visibility policing and traffic inspection from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, as explained at the time by Commander Roberto Fernandes, cited by the same source.
“This year, given the criminal situation of violence and insecurity that plagues the municipality of Praia, these days, the tutelage and the leadership of the National Police have given instructions for the daily execution, together and with the same plan, with the Regional Command units. Santiago Sul and Maio, Central Directorate of Criminal Investigation, Special Units Command Intervention Corps, Praia Control and Command Center, with a dozen vehicles on the ground at the same time”, he said.
It should be noted that, in recent weeks, the city of Praia has registered a new peak in crime, where murders stand out, in addition to the usual robberies, of people and homes and caçu bodies.
Usually, criminality tends to increase in the festive season, annually.
