Praia: International Human Rights Day marked with a focus on mental health

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The celebrations of the International Human Rights Day, which is celebrated today, 10, place the focus on the promotion of mental health. The National Commission for Human Rights and Citizenship (CNDHC), Associação A Ponte and the European Union mark the day with various activities in the city of Praia, with concentration in Praça Alexandre Albuquerque.

Zaida Freitas, president of the CNDHC, says it is urgent to implement a new social contract, a new paradigm and a new look at mental health, because, “this is the only way to break cycles of poverty and reduce social inequalities”, namely in people with greater vulnerability, as is the case of people with mental illness.

Failure to observe human rights, according to Zaida Freitas, creates a “fertile field” for the emergence and emergence of situations of mental illness.

As he recalled, the right to health is a human right, so he took the opportunity to invite Cape Verdean society to participate in the activities that will be promoted on December 10, starting at 9:00 am, at Praça Alexandre Albuquerque, in Platô, and which extend along the pedestrian street and which will culminate in a progressive performance on mental health with the group Raiz di Polon.

During the event, he informed, messages will be transmitted and flyers will be distributed with a focus on the protection of human rights and the promotion of mental health, with the participation of artists, for the so-called street theater.

Human Rights Day is celebrated every year on December 10, the date on which the United Nations General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a landmark document that proclaims the inalienable rights that everyone has right as a human being, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin.
