Africa-Press – Cape verde. About 150 participants have already confirmed their presence at the international conference of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, to take place from this Monday, 9, in the city of Praia, according to data updated this Saturday by Judge Januária Costa.

Under the theme “ECOWAS Integration Model – The Legal Implications of Regionalism, Sovereignty and Supranationalism”, the event, according to Januária Costa, will feature several speakers in various fields, including five Cape Verdean speakers.

“The ECOWAS Court of Justice proposed to bring about 150 speakers to the city of Praia for this conference. Delegations have already begun to arrive in the capital. We have a lot of interest from nationals in this event”, highlighted the ECOWAS judge of Cape Verdean nationality.

The official explained that this is the third conference being held by the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and that it aims to have a more comprehensive discussion on the issue of African integration in the sub-region. .

“The conference is not intended to discuss the court itself, but to have a much broader discussion on integration matters”, he explained.

“ECOWAS Integration Model”, “Regional Economic Integration”, “Sovereignty and Regionalism”, “Supernationalism and Regionalism”, “Regional Courts in the Regional Integration Process”, “Regional Integration and Regional Protection of Human Rights”, are some topics to be discussed during the event.

Another issue that will be on the table is the issue of free movement of people, goods and services as an important factor in regional economic integration.

The event, which can also be watched through the zoom platform, will take place at the Convention Center of the University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV) and the opening act will be presided over by the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves.

The ceremony will also feature speeches by the President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Hon. Judge Edward Amoako Asante, President of the ECOWAS Parliament, the Minister of Justice of Cape Verde and the President of the Supreme Court of Justice.

The Cape Verde conference follows those already held in Accra (Ghana) in 2019 and in Lomé (Togo) in 2021, with the purpose of debating the issue/model of regional integration and, at the same time, making itself known to the member states, through the dissemination of their actions.

Established by the political will of the states, the ECOWAS Court, according to Januária Costa, has no competence to execute its decisions, since it was constituted to decide, with the argument that execution is reserved for the states, “who is responsible for knowing the why the low enforcement of compliance with the decisions of this international court,” in the order of 30%.
