Africa-Press – Cape verde. The fifth edition of the medical expedition “See with good eyes” which ends this Saturday, 10, at the Agostinho Neto University Hospital (HUAN), in the city of Praia, benefited more than 800 people with cataract surgeries and free eye consultations.
This medical expedition carried out within the scope of the project promoted by the Equatorial Coca-Cola Bottling Company (ECCBC), in collaboration with the Elena Barraquer and Ruta de la Luz Foundations, carried out, between the 4th and 10th of December, around 360 cataract surgeries, 480 free eye consultations in addition to the donation of 350 glasses, 100 of which are sunglasses.
“Fresh Air Cushion” for HUAN
Emílio Moreira, ophthalmologist at the Hospital Universitário Agostinho Neto, considers that the referred project represents for Cape Verde, particularly for ophthalmology services and the general population, a “cushion of fresh air”
This is because, as he justified, “we annually register an average of a thousand patients who need to undergo cataract surgery. However, at the hospital we are only able to perform around 350 surgeries annually”.
In this sense, that ophthalmologist stressed that, thanks to the joint effort between HUAN and the partners promoting this expedition, in just one week it was possible to reach the number of surgeries performed during a year.
Free surgeries to more than 3,000 Africans
The medical expedition “See with good eyes” has 12 surgeons from the Elena Barraquer Foundation who perform eye surgeries for cataracts, accompanied by the Ruta de la Luz Foundation which, in turn, performs free eye exams and donates glasses to affected people for vision problems.
The project, which has been running since 2014, has provided free cataract surgeries to more than 3,000 people in five African countries, born out of the desire to eliminate eye health barriers and provide the opportunity to ensure access to a equitable global health.
