According to a Facebook post from the Presidency of the Republic, Carlos Vila Nova signed the presidential decree on Friday appointing Aurélio Pires Quaresma Martins to, on a service commission, hold the position of extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe in the Republic of Cape Verde.
Aurélio Pires Quaresma Martins has a degree in International Relations from the Private University of Angola and was a deputy and twice – 2011 and 2015 to 2018 – president of the São Tomé and Príncipe Liberation Movement/Social Democratic Party (MLSTP/PSD), leader of São Tomé opposition.
Aurélio Martins’ last term at the head of MLSTP/PSD ended in controversy, having been expelled from the party and accused of treason, after having signed a document, with two other party leaders, one of them the current Minister of Defense and Administration, Jorge Amado and other deputies from the Independent Democratic Action (current party in Government), for the dismissal of the president of the Supreme Court of Justice.
The São Tomé politician was also a candidate for the São Tomé presidential elections in 2011 and 2021, having been one of the opponents defeated by the current São Tomé President, Carlos Vila Nova.
He was a journalist at Rádio Nacional de Angola between 1991 and 2005 and is a consultant on business strategies and international relations.
