President of the Republic Calls for “Collective Commitment” to Improve Education in Cape Verde

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic congratulated all Cape Verdean teachers this Wednesday in Praia and stressed the importance of a joint effort to enhance the profession and improve the national education system. José Maria Neves, who was speaking to the press at the end of a visit to the Garah Foundation, left a message as part of the celebrations for Cape Verdean Teachers’ Day, celebrated today. For José Maria Neves, it is essential that all forces in society unite to implement reforms that improve the quality of education in Cape Verde. “The important thing is that everyone works towards improving the conditions for the professional development of teachers and the overall improvement of the Cape Verdean education system,” he urged. When asked by the press, the President of the Republic also responded to recent statements by the Prime Minister, who suggested that the presidential veto and the sending of the diploma regarding teachers’ salary conditions to the Constitutional Court only delayed its entry into force. “We must be prepared for democracy. Democracy requires debate and for all institutions to fulfil their role. Democracy is often slow and even boring for some people, but we must be mentally prepared to fully exercise democracy,” stated José Maria Neves.

The President also highlighted the progress made in the education sector, referring to the Job, Function and Remuneration Plan (PCFR) as a “significant achievement”, but considered that further progress is needed.

“It is now necessary for teachers, their representative unions, the Government, local authorities, companies and the entire Cape Verdean society to work, on the one hand, to continue improving the career and salary structures of teachers and also to continue working to gradually implement the reforms that are necessary to improve the quality of education in Cape Verde,” he stated.
