Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Instituto do Património Cultural (IPC), Ana Samira Baessa, guarantees, in the city of Praia, that the project of Valorização dos Farois de Cabo Verde is in the “advanced phase” and should be concluded by 2026.

“It’s a project to be implemented in three years, we’re basically in the second year and we’re counting to 2026 to finalize this intervention in all the countries that I mentioned, especially in the perspective of integrating cultural heritage and national tourism development,” he said.

“The objective of this project is to conserve the lighthouse as a historic monument and navigation aid element, at the same time that we confer a new use in the context of tourism and culture,” he said.

Financed by Cooperação Espanhola, through the Agência Espanhola de Cooperação e Desenvolvimento, in approximately 612 million euros, the initiative contemplates the intervention of eight historic lighthouses distributed across five islands: Boa Vista, São Vicente, Santiago, Maio and Santo Antão.

The project, which started last March, already has several interventions.

According to Ana Samira Baessa, the requalification of the lighthouse Maria Pia, in the city of Praia, is in its final phase, whose inauguration is scheduled for the first half of this year.

This intervention includes the implementation of an interpretative space for the history of the lighthouse and the city, as well as the requalification of the surrounding area, which will include a small restoration unit with an esplanade, reinforcing the local tourist potential.

It is equally contractual as interventions in the lighthouse of Fontes Pereira de Melo, in Santo Antão, and the terms of reference have been defined for the continuity of the project.

Among the objectives of the initiative is the creation of a specific tourist route for the lighthouses of Cabo Verde, promoting its integration in the tourist sector.

The project, according to Ana Samira Baessa, contemplates, likewise, training and capacitation actions for guides and tourist operators, as well as the production of dissemination materials and patrimonial education initiatives aimed at schools and communities.
