The president of the Integrated Development Association of Ribeira das Patas, in the municipality of Porto Novo, Santo Antão, said today that the rockfall and landslide in the Catano area remain “worrying”. For this reason, he requests the monitoring of the competent authorities in the matter.

Arlindo Delgado reinforced that the residents of Catano, one of the villages in Ribeira das Patas, have not been calm in the last two months due to rockfalls and landslides in the area, which have been intensifying in recent days.

“The situation is worrying. The population has not been calm and we ask the authorities to continue to monitor the place and take the necessary measures for the tranquility of the people”, asked the associative leader.

To Inforpress, residents confirmed that the falling of rocks and landslides in Catano, which has been happening since January 23, have intensified in recent days.

Antónia Almeida, a resident of the locality, said that “the population is very concerned”, as rockfalls in that area are becoming more and more frequent.

Authorities call for peace of mind

The Porto Novo City Council has been asking for “tranquility” to the population in Catano and has already appealed to people to avoid approaching the place where stones have been falling.

A civil protection team, made up of the commander of the Northern Region of Cape Verde, Vitória Veríssimo, a volcanologist and volunteer firefighters from Porto Novo was also recently at Ribeira das Patas, ensuring that the fall of rocks and landslides had whether to erosion.

Discarded seismic activity

Vitória Veríssimo ruled out any seismic activity in Ribeira das Patas, explaining that these are “rocks that are falling because of erosion”.

He recognizes, however, that this fact is conditioning the safety of people, namely farmers, who frequent the hillside.
